Project: University
Hospital Würzburg BA1

New head clinics and mother-child clinic center

About the project

On the newly acquired “Northern Expansion Site” in Würzburg’s Grombühl district, which spans approximately 10 hectares, the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW) and the Free State of Bavaria are planning the first phase of construction for the new hospital campus. New buildings for the “Head Clinic” and the “Women’s, Maternity, and Children’s Center,” with a total of 600 beds, will be constructed on the site.

The new building will consolidate several facilities and wards that were previously spread across different building complexes. In the future, the “Head Clinic” will include the Eye and ENT Clinic, the Clinic for Neurosurgery and Neurology, as well as other functional areas (e.g., Radiology). The “Women’s, Maternity, and Children’s Center” will bring together the Department of Gynecology and the Pediatric Clinic in the new building. In addition to the primarily clinical spaces, administrative and supply centers, as well as a multi-story parking garage, are planned.

From a building services engineering perspective, this magnificent project presents a multifaceted challenge. In addition to our traditional trades, we must account for emergency call systems, medical gases, automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems, and strict hygiene standards—particularly in operating rooms and intensive care units. The various systems and the entire building services infrastructure must harmonize and function seamlessly, as safety, patient well-being, and efficient operational processes for the hospital staff are paramount—while consistently prioritizing comfort and energy efficiency.

Planning for the new hospital campus has already begun in collaboration with the consortium partners: Hascher Jehle Objektplanung GmbH, Architektengruppe Schweitzer GmbH, wh-p GmbH Consulting Engineers, and Ingenieurbüro Liebert Versorungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.
