Bosch and Siemens Home
Appliances GmbH (B/S/H) Project

NEW RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER, PW-SERVICES BUILDING, BERLIN

About the project

Here, where much of the laundry care expertise of Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances is concentrated, some 1,100 technicians and engineers are already working on the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective washing machines and dryers of tomorrow. To accommodate the complex functional interrelationships and the necessary flexibility, a clear, identity-defining architecture with communicative connections between the office and laboratory areas was to be created.

The new building, situated directly on the banks of the Spree, consists of a central, seven-story main structure for the test bench and laboratory areas, to which six flexibly usable office modules are attached. The building’s considerable size (105 m x 85 m) is deliberately scaled down through the modular structure and dynamic curves of the technically inspired metal façade. The east facade, generously glazed over six stories facing the Spree, contributes significantly to the building’s character. Below it is the employee cafeteria with an outdoor terrace directly on the waterfront.

The new technology center symbolizes the successful transition from a manufacturing hub to a future-oriented innovation hub. Since resource conservation and energy efficiency are key aspects for the future development of household appliances, the new building was also planned and constructed according to the principles of a green building concept. It has also received multiple awards, including the Winner Iconic Awards 2015 and a Special Mention at the German Design Award 2016.
